Gold Rush

The three periods most important from 1800 to 1850 were the Fur Trade, The Oregon Trail, and the Gold Rush.

FUR TRADE

The fur trade was well established before 1800 and continued throughout the period peaking in the early 1830's.

OREGON TRAIL

The Oregon Trail period started as the annual fur brigade caravan to the continental divide area stopped. The reports of explorers and mountain men about the attractions of the lower Columbia River enticed discouraged and restless eastern farmers to pull up stakes and head west.

GOLD RUSH

Almost every head in the world turned toward California in 1849 when free gold in vast quantities promised to erase people's debts or lead to the lap of luxury. They rushed there by the tens of thousands in one year in every conveyance or even walked across the continent.
