                      Western States

22 of the 48 lower continental U.S. states contain land west of the Mississippi River. Five states abut the river and were the jumping off place or gateway to the west . Mexico forms the southern boundary of the western U.S. from Texas on the Gulf of Mexico to California on the Pacific Ocean. The Canadian province of Ontario contained important sites on the border that influenced the development of the U.S. western states.
