Western Regions

              Regions are geographical areas of a nominal 2.5 degree latitude by 2 degree longitude size that encompassed significant historical activity prior to 1850. The size was chosen so the area could be easily seen on a computer screen with  historical site symbols displayed. Decluttering precludes showing all the sites listed in the tables. Some sites are shown in GPS map locations different from their table assignments due to map projections.

Region 1 – San Diego             

 The Los Angeles and Santa Ana River basins to the Mexican border at San Diego. 

Region 2 – El Camino Real 

The road from San Buenaventura Mission to the Soledad and San Antonio Missions.

 Region 3 – California

Fort Ross, Napa Valley, Sacramento, the Gold Country, San Francisco and Monterey.

Region 4 – Astoria                                  

Cowlitz Prairie, The Dalles, tidal Columbia River and Willamette Valley.

Region 5 – Nisqually                                

Lower Puget Sound from New Market(Tumwater) to Fort Steilacoom.

Region 6 – Spokane       

Upper Columbia River and Lower Spokane River basins, Fort Okanagan to Kettle Falls.

Region 7 – Walla Walla                                  

Walla Walla River, Blue Mountains and Snake River to Fort Boise.

Region 8 – Flathead    

 Lakes Coeur d’Alene and Pend Oreille, Clark Fork River, Flathead Lake, Bitterroot River.

Region 13 – Arikara                            

Missouri River basin from Bismarck to ND/SD line to Mobridge to US212.

Region 14 – Three Forks/Yellowstone                                                       

Yellowstone/Grand Teton NP environs.

Region 15 – Wind River      

Wind/Upper Big Horn/Sweetwater/Powder River basins and South Pass, Casper/Orin.

Region 16 – Sioux                                                               

Missouri River basin from US212 to Pierre to NE line.

Region 17 – Wasatch      

Great Salt Lake valley, Portneuf River valley, Bear Lake and River, Wasatch/Uintah Mts.

Region 18 – North Platte                                                 

North Platte River basin from Orin to Ash Hollow in NE.

Region 19 – Omaha                          

Missouri River basin from NE line to Omaha to MO line, Lower Platte River.

Region 20 – Green River                                            

Lower Green and Gunnison River basins and Brown’s Hole.
